I’ve gutted the old, non-functioning LED components and designed a brand new circuit based on the Neopixel and Teensy infrastructures and built on the structural bones of the old exhibit. I hand-soldered and hand-assembled the LED matrix and wrote Arduino code that would allow the video to play on this custom-shaped LED display powered only by an Arduino Nano. The outer layer of the piece is a 3D-scanned model of an ancient Greek frieze that I algorithmically glitched and then had industrially 3D-printed. <img width="4896" height="3264" width_o="4896" height_o="3264" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4f28db4528c9ebb70492baf5a501f3cb655cc68c75bfc936c46f8135ae8ffe85/DSCF2208.jpg" data-mid="70319274" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4f28db4528c9ebb70492baf5a501f3cb655cc68c75bfc936c46f8135ae8ffe85/DSCF2208.jpg" /> Conceptual Context: From 1801 to 1812, Thomas Bruce, also known as the Earl of Elgin, facilitated the removal of nearly half of the sculptures and reliefs from the Parthenon in Athens Greece despite questionable proof that he was given full permission to do so. Not long after being brought back to his home of Great Britain, the sculptures were acquired by the British Museum. Just twenty years later, when Greece gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire it began a campaign to repatriate the Parthenon Marbles that has continued at varying levels of intensity to this day. It is based on a 3D scan of a Parthenon relief held in the British Museum. The cracks were generated by algorithmically applying a digital “pixel” to the surface of the relief for every week that the work has been separated from the cultural and historical context of its country of origin.Emanating from inside is the “spirit” of the work, represented by an abstracted video of the Greek coast, that is slowly leaking out due to this separation. I am consistently developing and producing new figure designs under this label which I sell on Etsy. Every figure I produce is custom-modeled in ZBrush, then 3D printed using a resin 3D printer. I then apply an extensive process of filling, sanding and spray-coating these models to a professional finish at which point I use them as the original to produce silicone molds. These molds are then used to cast the final designer toys out of various colors of resin through processes of pressure treating or roto-casting. Three remote control cars run on twisting tracks, defying gravity using magnetized wheels. They are each controlled from a driver's seat where a visitor can steer the car and see on a display live video transmitted from a camera mounted on the front of each car. Unfortunately due it’s complexity and age, it is one of the most temperamental and unreliable exhibits, requiring constant maintenance to keep it working for longer than a day or so. I designed a circuit that would both charge a small LiPo battery and allow the car to be powered by the track when electricity was successfully flowing. But if there is a temporary break in the electrical connection, the circuit switches to battery power, allowing the car to continue functioning until the connection is reestablished. With moderate usage, grime collected between the magnet and the pickup axle, preventing a clean connection. It illustrates on a huge scale the relationships between the diameter and circumference of a circle as it relates to the value of pi. I designed and built it along with the Associate Director of National Museum of Mathematics Tim Nissen. Tim brought the concept and some basic sketches to me and I was tasked with designing, sourcing and fabricating the actual physical and mechanical components. The centerpiece is a USB-connected unit which in its default state cools the literal mini iceberg inside. However when the user of the connected computer visits a website requiring significant bandwidth, the device switches to heating mode, causing the iceberg to quickly melt. As it melts into the lower electronics, water eventually accumulates to the point that a simulated short circuit is triggered, rendering the connected computer inoperable. In this way the device also illustrates the self-destructive nature of environmentally unfriendly activity. In some cases this work simply involved repairing or replacing motors, LEDs, buttons, relays, circuit boards or other functional components. But in others I took the initiative to make more significant design changes to the exhibits to improve their functionality and increase their longevity. These are some examples of this sort of work. Pattern Mesh Spring MechanismOpening up this exhibit I discovered that its initial functionality to “grip” the pattern discs with its rotating rubber wheels had long ago broken, and a shoddy, improvised modification was the only reason it was not completely nonfunctional.
